The temporary structure has taken years of dreaming, three months of international collaboration, hundreds of recycled pallets and five days to install at Tapapakanga Regional Park. But by the time festival goers get to Portavilion Splore 2012, it will simply be a place to chill and play.
“The festival atmosphere is ideal for breaking down barriers, reaching new audiences and providing opportunities for a broad community to interact in a creative way,” says British public arts curator Emma Underhill.
A continuation of her Portavilion series of large temporary structures, which has featured in London parks and public spaces, the New Zealand work is a collaboration with Splore, arts group Cut Collective and architect Jasper Middleton.
The international collaboration is a new move for the festival and an extension of the arts programme, which features NZ’s established and emerging artists and designers, curated by Mark Osborne.
Emma, who arrived in New Zealand this week, tells us more about the series and why engagement and participation is an important of the work.
