STRATEGISING, ENSURING & MAINTAINING THAT THE SUPER-CITY COUNCIL CONSISTENTLY ENSURES THE FUTURE SUCCESS OF THE PERFORMING ARTS IN AUCKLAND

Convenor: Diana Fenwick

Participants: Graham Dunster, Sarah Dugdale, Frith Walker, Penny Sefuiva, Amberleigh McConnell, David inns, Sally Markham

Priority: TWO (26 dots)

Notes:

The arts are on the Super City agenda –in culture and heritage sector.

Concern is that the full ATA Straw Structure is scheduled to happen by Jan 2010 but there is no formal forum to lobby ATA.

Several discussion areas flowed out of this information:

  1. Discussion on who to lobby – Central Government?  ATA?
  2. Discussion on arts adding value to social structure of city – economic development.
  3. Discussion on strategising – using events such as Rugby World Cup as catalyst and an opportunity for the arts sector.
  4. Discussion on forming a lobby group for the sector so that it has a central cohesive structure.
  5. Discussion around targeting key people to present an argument to organisations.
  6. Discussion on collaboration between existing groups/organisations so that the sector can provide strong lobbying platforms.  Issues for collaboration between various organisations in the sector:

Sector needs:

  • To be less isolationist and build partnerships.
  • To build trust so that lobbying can come from different people/organisations in the sector without fear of reprisal.
  • To keep the sector informed and information flowing.

Key Points:  - in order of priority.

The Super City is an opportunity for the arts sector:

  1. There needs to be a clear vision for the sector.  This relates to economic development it can bring to the Super City through investment in its vision.
  2. There needs to be a consistent message and persistent lobbying.  Collaboration under an umbrella organisation was seen as essential to achieve this.
  3. Sector awareness of the 3rd Bill was seen as crucial in terms of lobbying.  Date for this 6 December.
  4. Leverage off events such as Rugby World Cup to raise profile.
  5. Clarity around management of and access to venues was seen as an area of concern in the Super City structure.

First or next steps:

  1. Revive AAA (Arts Advocates Auckland) and invite different people/organisations to contribute to the vision.  Alternatively use 10 November TAPAC meeting as a platform to develop this.
  2. Work on a lobbying strategy
  3. Get motivated to make submissions to the 3rd Bill (6th December 20??)

Risk – Down time over summer results in no submissions from the sector.
