Increasing public participation in the arts
Some of the Big Questions asked included:
- How do we advocate the core, the meta dialogue, of the need art meets in us as a society?
- How do we get everyone participating in the arts?
- How do we facilitate engagement with the arts and articulate benefit?
- Why/how does society value the arts?
- How do we cultivate an attitude of public ownership?
- How do we achieve a balance between high-end [national and international] art and grass roots art?
- How do we encourage Wellingtonians to be more engaged with the arts?
Some possible actions are.
- Establishing a high level Arts Ambassador position or positions - potential research positions
- Set up of a "push-play" campaign for art activity
- A hui for arts educators
- Development of a cross-organisation arts education unit
- Educating artists to work with communities and in other socially engaged settings
- Setting up a participatory arts hui

The push play initative sounds interesting.
I am working on developing a website for New Zealand artists to profile and sell their artwork to the world (http://www.artklick.co.nz).
I have developed the idea of "The Free Art Project" where I will get a 1.5 x 5m canvas and invite everyone at The Rhythm and Vines to do one brush stroke each - take a photo of them pointing to their stroke - email them the photo and then chop the canvas into 5-10,000 pieces and post the contributors out a piece each.
For far more information check out http://www.artklick.com/events
You will also see at the bottom of that page National Snow Art Day which I hope to launch next year.
I am a strong believer you need to use the internet and social networks to it's full potential.
I have just moved to Wellington and LOVE it!
I also work for http://www.madefromnewzealand.com as the community manager/developer and have also been given the responsibility to develop the arts community as the site develops (it is just 2 weeks old) but has a huge vision.
We are also opening a gallery / design house / cafe / think tank on Courtenay Place next to Saatchi and Saatchi next week!
If anyone is keen to work together please get in touch at james@artklick.com or 0273209881
Cheers!
