Alberto Baraya: An Expedition To New Zealand
In his ongoing Herbarium of Artificial Plants Baraya creates elaborate botanical displays. This exhibition features New Zealand additions to the Herbarium, collected during his ‘expedition’ in the North Island. Merging colonial exploitation with contemporary consumerism, tourism and global exchange, Baraya’s taxonomies mimic accurate botanical classifications, exposing the arbitrariness of the scientific paradigm and exploring our consumption and use of nature. Baraya will also present the new offsite project SilkFern, related to his Herbarium, in the celebrated Fernery at New Plymouth’s Pukekura Park.
