Play Gamelan (Indonesian Percussion Orchestra)
The sound of the gamelan orchestras of Java and Bali has been described as ‘flowing water’, a subtle interweaving of different layers into a euphonious stream of sound. This course introduces the basic playing techniques of the instruments, and explains how the music is put together. By the end of the session all participants will perform together a classical gamelan piece. No former musical knowledge or practical experience is required.
Tutor: Budi Putra, director Gamelan Padhang Moncar
Introduction: Assoc. Prof Jack Body
Budi Putra is the lecturer in Javanese gamelan at the NZ School of Music. As an expert practitioner he is skilled on all gamelan instruments, as well as being a superb vocalist. Jack Body has had a long fascination with Indonesian gamelan, and several of his compositions have been influenced by gamelan.
Members of the NZSM community gamelan will also assist in the workshop which runs from 2pm to 5pm.
