Auckland Museum hosts 'Artists in Conversation'

Auckland Museum, in partnership with the US Consulate, is honoured to have celebrated Navajo artist Dennis Jeffy make one of his only journeys off the Navajo reservation in Jeddito, Arizona for “Artists in Conversation” on November 24th.

Jeffy follows in the footsteps of the great artists of the Native American Fine Arts Movement of the 1800s, and experiments with a range of mediums including painting, drawing, sculpting and fabric design.

To celebrate his visit, Auckland Museum is hosting a conversation between Jeffy and another legendary indigenous artist of the same generation – renowned Maori artist, Darcy Nicholas. Nicholas perhaps shares more of a similarity with Jeffy than any other artist of his kind, especially given that Nicholas received a Fulbright award in 1984 to study contemporary Native American cultures and arts.

These two artists will investigate the similarities between the native cultures of the Maori and the Navajo Nation and explore indigenous art, tribal practices, cultural artefacts and their respective influences on contemporary Navajo and Maori art.
