Mari Corrêa is a Brazilian documentary maker and editor, and is also the co-director of the NGO Videos in the Villages, which provides training programmes for indigenous videomakers. This project has resulted in the creation of important film archives of indigenous peoples of Brazil, and the production of over 70 films, many of which received national and international awards.
Her film Pirinop, My First Contact will be screening in the Reel Brazil Film Festival. This extraordinary documentary introduces us to Brazil's indigenous Ikpeng people. From their homeland in a remote corner of the Amazon, the film explores their first contact with the outside world in 1964.
Corrêa will be a guest of the Reel Brazil Film Festival and is looking forward to meeting New Zealand filmmakers, and people who have an interest in indigenous themes.
This panel discussion will bring together New Zealand and Brazilian film makers and will address the challenges and achievements of telling indigenous stories through film, as well as looking at how New Zealand and Brazilian filmmakers can work collaboratively. This will be an informal and lively discussion and audience members are encouraged to share their experiences, knowledge and questions.
