MAORI art MARKet promises to be bigger and better than both the San Francisco 'Maori Art Meets America' project in 2005, as well as ‘MAORI MARKet 2007’ in Wellington city.

This prestigious contemporary Maori art exhibition will be host to artist debates, presentations and a sensational opening gala evening. Indigenous fashion designer Dorothy Grant's lastest collection, hot off the New York fashion week runway, will be stepping out each day.

We have nine guest artists which include leading Native American, First Nations Canada, Pacific Islands and New Zealand artists. This emphasis on the artist is a key difference between this gathering and other art fairs. MAORI art MARKet is a time for the public to meet the artists, see them working, and for the artists to discuss and debate the issues of today.

The MAORI art MARKet event is led by a unique partnership between Toi Maori Aotearoa and Porirua city in association with Pataka Museum of Arts and Cultures and Te Rauparaha Arena .

6.00pm - Official launch of MAORI ART MARKet in the Te Rauparaha Arena.
Guests assemble in the exhibiting space or Foyer entrance for drinks, finger food, and music.

Tribute to Inia Te Wiata

During the 2007 MAORI ART MARKet, artists acknowledged the art of Film Maker and actor Don Selwyn. On this occasion they will acknowledge baritone Inia Te Wiata by singing songs from some of his beloved shows. Recent Sun Aria winner Aivale Cole (Soprano) presents ` Summer Time’ from the musical `Porgy and Bess’, Baritone Frankie Stevens presents `Ole Man River’ from Show Boat, and Wiremu Winitana (tenor) presents a Maori recital specially selected by Inia as part of his favourite Maori songs.

The fashion show on the opening night is a teaser for the full show which will commence at 12.30pm on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It features ; Dorothy Grant (USA/Canada), Patricia Michael, (USA,) Suzanne Tamaki (Native Sista’s Label) Charmaine Love (Kia Kaha label) Contemporary Maori Weavers (Kohai Grace, Rose White, Elaine Bevan, Pip , Karl Leonard.)
Galleries are then officially open for the purchasing of art.

10.30am - The Art of Weaving
A discussion and presentation by the countries leading weavers demonstrating their latest techniques, traditional weaving, trends in weaving, experiences and new ideas from the eternal threads exhibition that toured the United States of America in 2005

12.30pm - Fashion show

2.00pm - Ta Moko
Leading exponents of the art of Ta Moko speak on their work, the concepts, the symbols, the experiences locally and internationally. Speakers include Derek Lardelli, Mark Kopua and Hohua Mohi.

3.30pm - Te Maori
The major touring show of traditional Maori carving through the United States in the early 1980’s, what happened then, what has happened since, where to from here. Professor Hirini Moko Mead, Professor Piri Sciascia, Professor Dr Kara Puketapu. (Professor Robert Jahnke to chair).

A discussion featuring entertainer Frankie Stevens, Wiremu Winitana, (tenor) Mere Boynton (soprano) on their careers, singing, the music, and the problems and solutions in developing a career in the music industry.

3.30pm - The Fashion Industry
Patricia Michaels from Taos, New Mexico talks about her fashion label, her career, in discussion with Suzanne Tamaki and Charmaine Love.
