CALLUM ARNOLD - DIVERGENCE
Callum Arnolds new exhibition 'Divergence' will be on display at Suite Art Gallery in Newtown, Wellington, from the 2nd - 19th September 2009.
Arnold is well known for his challenge of the traditional portrayal of our landscape as static. They are reminiscent of journeys, the blur of landscapes shown through a windscreen. His paintings go beyond the purely realistic by overlapping and layering multiple images that create complex landscapes.
"Each Arnold painting seeks to lock onto some epiphany, some moment of serenity, and at the same time the unstable realism suggests fault-lines at work: the landscape juddering or blurring in response to unseen forces. It's all a teasing play on structure and erasure, on vanishings and appearances, and demonstrates Arnold's mastery of formal balance.
Each painting is an amalgam - a blend of layered imagery worked up from drawings, photo-graphs and computer software - held together structurally by a zigzag of diagonals converging on middle distance. The paintwork is exquisite." (David Eggleton, NZ Listener, 7 April 2006).
Since giving up his teaching post at Lincoln High School, Arnold has
painted full-time. His work is sought after by a number of influential
art collectors, including senior artists.
Suite will exhibit Arnold's recent paintings of the South Island,
continuing the layered, memory-like landscapes that Arnold is known for.
Meet with Callum at the exhibition opening, Friday 4 September 5.30 - 7.30pm.
