Music, Mayhem and Michelangelo | Opera & Picnic

Erikka Lindsay for Opera in Myers Park

Aucklanders, inner city and outer suburban dwellers, are invited to help the K' Road community celebrate its very first 'Opera in the Park' in Myers Park.

Guests are urged to dust off their picnic hampers and head down to the leafy environs of this 100-year-old venue between 2pm and 4pm on Sunday 27 September 2009 where they will be entertained by emerging opera talent Erikka Lindsay and K' Road historian Edward Bennett.

Resplendent in gorgeous dress , twenty something year-old, Erikka will be giving renditions of opera favourites below historoic Myers Park Kindergarten. Edward will be in attendance to regale guests with stories of the park's history and its creator.

'Opera in Myers Park' is the brainchild of K' Road Business Association Manager Barbara Holloway who saw opera being performed from balconies in the streets of Amsterdam on a visit there recently.

'I thought how wonderful it would be to have people singing in the open air here. I've heard from the various young people's concerts which have been held in Myers Park, it has great acoustics. It's a natural amphitheatre.'

Ms Holloway is particularly interested in encouraging local residents to use the park more for this type of event rather than just as a thoroughfare to Queen Street shops.

As Myers Park has recently been added into the K' Road Mainstreet boundary, the Business Association will be holding ongoing events there with free salsa lessons being first on the agenda for New Year 2010.
