Arts and Inclusion - led by Marguerite Vanderkolk
Arts and Inclusion- a discussion led by Marguerite Vanderkolk, IHC advocate. (Hub Session)
Wednesday 28 April, 12.30-1.30pm
"What are the arts about and what is their role in society? One of the most powerful things about art is that it challenges our thinking and can influence society to become more inclusive." Marguerite Vanderkolk, an Advocate for IHC, will talk about the arts and inclusion, what creative spaces can provide, and her role as an advocate for intellectually disabled people.
As an advocate, Marguerite works on systemic advocacy. It involves influencing government policy and legislation; raising awareness and changing attitudes by increasing understanding of intellectual disability; and working to create inclusive schools, communities, and workplaces. Marguerite's background is in secondary school teaching, where she used the performing arts as a teaching and learning tool with students who struggled with the conventional education system. Consequently, she knows how powerful the arts can be in helping people learn and make sense of the world around them.
