Kathryn Madill: The Red Forest and Other Paintings
Opening at Solander on Wednesday 28 April is 'The Red Forest and Other Paintings', an exhibition of stunning new watercolour paintings by renowned artist Kathryn Madill.
The exhibition showcases two suites of paintings featuring Madill's signature rich, allegorical imagery - 'The Red Forest' and 'Time is Bleeding'. Figures emerge from a red forest, fires flare on the plains under a luminous sky and birds and otherworldly animals move in procession or observe from the borders.
The intimate scale of the paintings draws the viewer into this haunting world that feels part fairytale, part dream or premonition.
Madill was born in Ruatahuna in 1951, and has lived in Taupo, Nelson and Dunedin. Graduating from Canterbury University in 1971 she holds a Diploma of Fine Art majoring in Printmaking. An established printmaker and painter, Madill has exhibited widely in New Zealand in both solo and group exhibitions. In December 2004 she travelled to Antarctica as an Antarctic Arts Fellow.
Kathryn Madill currently lives and works in Dunedin.
