On the 23 July 1927 a groundbreaking exhibition opened in Stuttgart titled "Die Wohnung" ("The Dwelling"). The exhibition consisted of 33 houses built by 17 architects. All houses were fully furnished and open to the public during the time of the exhibition. In four months 500,000 people came to see the dwellings. Why? Because the 17 men who built them were among the elite of contemporary architects: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, J.J.P Oud, Hans Scharoun, Peter Behrens and Le Corbusier to name but a few. This course will explore the concepts and ideas behind the building project, look at the exhibition and its impact, survey some of the houses and place them in their historical context.
