Developing an International Arts Practice

Developing an International Arts Practice

Wednesday 25 August

6pm - 7pm

Artists of any discipline are invited to enter into an informal discussion about international networking, and how to go about establishing an international practice in their field. There are a variety of roads that lead overseas. Dancers and performers may decide to tour, or join an existing troupe, band or theatre group abroad. How does this differ from a touring visual art exhibition? What is involved? What are the pitfalls? Shared experience is often a cautionary tale. Attending this evening discussion could save you thousands of dollars and potential drama or heartache. What options have you been considering as your next career move? Is this a good or bad time to expand or take action in your case?

Kate Spencer, art business mentor, leads a conversation looking at strategies for international arts practice. After completing her BA in New York, 1979, Kate became a self-employed artist, painting and exhibiting internationally. After settling in NZ in 1986, she continued to exhibit her work overseas. As the founding director of The Space in Christchurch, NZ 1994, she organised performances, concerts, and taught creative courses. In 1996 she set up one of the first websites for the Arts in New Zealand, www.artists.co.nzIn 1998 her focus shifted to Business skills and with the FUSE Art Business Initiative courses, she began showing artists ways to sustain the core of their art practice. Kate currently mentors artists one-on-one, and delivers a six-day intensive course called Art's Your Business, where she provides a holistic approach to conducting business in the Arts.

Kate will also be available on Thursday 26th for one-to-one conversations. For more detail on these sessions and on Kate’s upcoming Art’s Your Business course please contact Kate on kate@artists.co.nz.
