Clairmont on Clairmont Documentary Screening
CLAIRMONT ON CLAIRMONT - Documentary Film (40min)
Screeening at Satellite Gallery, 26th August 5.30pm
A personal exploration on film of Philip Clairmont, one of New Zealand's most powerful painters, by his son Orlando. Special pre-screening introduction by Rachel Power, Philip Clairmont's partner.
You can hear Rachel interviewed by Martin Edmond, author of 'The Resurrection of Philip Clairmont' Auckland University Press (1999), on the Cultural Icons programme here.
Orlando searches for the father he never knew, finding traces of him within a brilliant legacy of expressionist art works; and getting to know the man himself through archival film and sound material that survives. Clairmont On Clairmont is unique in that we get to hear Philip Clairmont discuss his own work in his own words, as reconstructed from audio interviews conducted before his death. Featuring 101 original works by one of New Zealand's most powerful painters;including material from the artist's own notebooks, rarely seen nudes from the family collection, juvenilia from his mother's personal collection, and classic Clairmonts from all the major galleries, institutions and collections in NZ - as well as archival film footage of the man himself. Producer Michele Fantl, Director Orlando Clairmont, 50 minutes
