Strategic exhibition programming workshop
This poutama three | step three workshop is for museum and gallery professionals who have over five years experience in the museum sector
Auckland | Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum, corner Quay and Hobson Streets, Auckland.
Monday 6th December, 10am–4.30pm
This workshop will cover:
· How to get to know your audience and what they want to see.
· How you might use exhibitions for audience development.
· Models for strategic exhibition programming – strengths and weaknesses.
· What to consider when regarding travelling exhibitions.
· Mapping the future – how far in advance should your exhibition programme extend.
· An opportunity to review your own exhibition strategy.
Who will I meet?
Mark Donovan, Experience Group Director – Te Papa
Mark took up the role of Experience Group Director in June 2009. The Experience Group is the largest division at Te Papa. Staff are responsible for exhibition development, events, the children’s Discovery Centres, library services, and Host services.
Before joining Te Papa, Mark was Senior Director for Exhibits and Design at the National Aquarium Institute in Baltimore. While there, he focused on extending the scope of the institution and its public programmes, including the exhibits. He achieved a 2008 American Zoo and Aquarium Association award for best live animal exhibit – Animal Planet Australia: Wild Extremes.
Mark has served in an advisory capacity on institutional boards in the United States and Europe. Before his time in Baltimore, he:
· Worked at Syracuse University in the museum studies programme.
· Helped establish a travelling exhibit programme for New York State.
· Served as Deputy Director of the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, New York.
Desmond Brice, Group Manager Product Development, Concept Development – Te Papa
Desmond has worked in the heritage sector for more than 20 years. Since 2001, he has led exhibition development for Te Papa. Over this period, Desmond has overseen the development of numerous long and short-term exhibitions, including the innovative and immersive Our Space http://www.ourspace.tepapa.com and Whales | Tohora, a unique blend of new science and cultural history.
His professional interests include the incorporation of customary knowledge systems into museum experiences, tailoring content to specific learning styles, and the diversification of museum audiences.
Tim Walker – museum consultant
Tim has an MA in Art History from the University of Auckland and started work in the museum sector in 1985 when he began his career as the Curator (Fine Arts) at the Waikato Museum. In 1988 he joined the staff of the National Art Gallery in Wellington as a Curator of NZ Art and by 1989 was Curator in Charge. Tim played a leading role, as Senior Curator (Art) and Concept Developer in the development and opening of Te Papa.
In 1998 Tim started as Director of the Dowse Art Museum which he led through a period of major strategic and infrastructural development over the next decade culminating in the opening of TheNewDowse in February 2007. As Director, Museums in Hutt City since 2003 Tim also led the Petone Settlers Museum.
After a short period at the Auckland Museum in 2008 Tim set up Tim Walker Associates in February 2009. In his work as a consultant he is focused on building greater strategic capability in the museum sector and increased collaboration between cultural, creative and commercial sectors.
