Whangarei Sculpture Symposium 2010

Sculpture which reflects on, resonates with and amplifies our sense of self, of place and of history

Art which grows our sense of connection to specific places and our sense of connection to our own culture and the culture of others

Works which show us our history and stories...

And reflect back to us our pride in Whangarei

These are just a few of the Big Ambitions which we have for Whangarei, for our community, for our public spaces, for our sense of ourselves.

Should your expression of interest be successful we will send you a REGISTRATION form which you will need to fill out and return to us with your $150 entry fee by December 16th  2009.

From February 10th to February 19th DATE 2010- inaugural sculpture symposium: YOU are invited to consider an

  • Opportunity to have your finished piece purchased and sited at Elliot Reserve ( up to a value of $5000 )
  • Work alongside other talented artists to create unique pieces which reflect local stories and the history of Whangarei ( the Hatea River and Parihaka )
  • Share your knowledge, skills and wisdom in a series of artist talks and listen to others
  • Raise the profile of three dimensional arts in Whangarei, share your process with the residents of and visitors to Whangarei
  • Contribute to a BIG Vision which sees Whangarei’s public spaces populated with art, raising awareness, pride and a sense of history for local residents and visitors alike

A panel of judges will select a work for the District to buy. Other pieces will be auctioned on the final day when a festival of food and music will conclude the 2010 symposium. (A 25% commission will be collected to support future symposia).Unsold works must be removed by the 26th of February 2010.

We are INVITING YOU  because we believe your work could reflect the stories, history and culture(s) of Whangarei and because we believe that you may share our passion to see the arts Visible, Vibrant and Visionary in Whangarei.

We will supply Oamaru stone and a selection of wood pieces.
