DOC Lab 2010

The explosive growth of cross media has meant that boundaries and borders are fast disappearing as one form of media intermixes with another, and then another, and so on; creating new prototypes of entertainment media.  Film meets gaming meets virtual worlds meets mobile videos meets podcasts meets audience participatory media meets social networking…. and the list goes on.

With fast evolving audience tastes and demands along-side innovation and technology, new opportunities for new prototypes in story-telling, interaction, collaboration and co-productions are arising. Added to this, there is the global village which we live in, the fusion of communities and cultures as well as our society’s need for immediacy, relevance and participation.

Content creators need to embrace cross-media and 360 degree platforms.

We are now open for applications to DOC Lab 2010. Up to 12 teams will be selected to attend the two-day Lab (27 & 28 February 2010). Wendy Levy of The Producer’s Institute (USA, www.bavc.org), will facilitate the Lab which will also feature local and international mentors from diverse areas like story-telling, gaming, motion graphics and animation, social networking, virtual worlds, producing, 3G and mobile technology and film/TV making. Together, they will introduce, discuss and work with the selected teams to develop their projects to include all the diverse cross-platforms.

This is a significant opportunity for teams who recognize the urgency in developing new prototypes for content creation and delivery so as to fully maximize the potential of their projects as well as to compete internationally.

The DOC Lab 2010 will act as an incubator aiming to enable the presenters with the opportunity to develop their projects by sharing ideas as well as through mentorship programme based on feedback and interactive participation.

Whether you are in drama or documentary, attending DOC Lab is a must if you wish to develop digital media ideas across-platforms as you can benefit from the skills and knowledge of the presenters.

Projects

Teams should either have a documentary project in development or one which is currently being filmed. We seek projects that are challenging, innovative in their subject matter that will translate across different platforms in creation, treatment and delivery.

In the selection process, priority will be given to:

  • Documentary projects with international appeal and strong co-production potential
  • Creative and cinematic projects
  • Short and feature-length projects
  • Projects that explore different cross-platform opportunities e.g. virtual worlds, gaming, social networking and communities, live performance, podcasts, mobile phone delivery, internet delivery, animation

    The Documentary New Zealand Trust

Is a non-for-profit charitable organization that advocates and promotes the importance of documentary films and filmmaking in New Zealand to our creative, business and wider communities. The Trust organizes the Documentary Edge Festival and Documentary Edge Forum and Pitching Forum.

Documentary Edge Festival is Australasia's only international competitive documentary film festival held annually in New Zealand and showcases the very best documentary film from New Zealand and around the World. The festival runs from late February and includes an Awards Night, Q&A sessions with filmmakers, social functions and more.

Documentary Edge Forum is a 3-day industry event runs at the same time of Documentary Edge Festival. It includes master-classes, seminars and panels. A key event of the Forum is a Pitching Forum attended by overseas commissioners, buyers and sales agents where selected projects are pitched with an opportunity to earn a commission or co-production funding. Documentary Edge also examine the innovations and challenges facing the documentary filmmaking industry so as to better equip our filmmakers. The Forum is place to learn and network with local and international professionals from the industry.

The Trust is also developing the establishment of Documentary Edge Campus, a Resouce Centre for documentaries in Auckland.
