The festival events are focussed around the weekend of the 30th July to the 1st August spanning our four festival venues.
Community Art Projects
Giant Art in the Forum North Exhibition Hall – add your masterpiece to the wall in the hall
Massive Lanterns – Help create two enormous lanterns at the Old Library
1000 Whales for Whangarei – Fold an origami whale and help make 1000 whales
Sunday Gospel Hour – Join in with the Gospel Choir on the Main Stage in Forum North on Sunday 1st August from 1pm

Interactive Arts and Crafts
The Old Library will come alive with activity and inspiration during MWAF 2010! Artists, Artisans, Craftspeople from all walks will be there! Come to a transformed Old Library and enjoy Northland’s many different arts and cultures: Indian henna, Tibetan sand painting, Japanese origami, felting and see many Artists at work: Graffiti Art, Poetry alive, massive community lanterns…and much more.

Arts organisations from across the spectrum will be out in force! This is a chance to find out who is doing what, and how to get involved.

Festival of Light and Colour
From the 30th July until the end of the MWAF The Quarry Arts Centre will be transformed into a wonderland of lights and colour each night from 6pm to 9pm. Come along rain or hail- there’s plenty of undercover areas and with the wood fired pizza oven running, the mulled wine flowing and the atmosphere electric there’s plenty to keep you warm.

GR8 PL8 exhibition
Back after last year’s success: 100 artists – 100 plates. Chosen fine artists have turned bisque fired white plates into amazing works of art which will be exhibited from Thurs 1st July till Tues 3rd August in the Yvonne Rust gallery and auctioned off on Trademe from 26th July for 10 days –search ‘greatplate’ .
The proceeds from these incredible collector’s items will go towards the rebuilding of the Yvonne Rust gallery and office in 2010/11.
Lantern Parade, Fire Show & Grande Finale
Sunday the 1st August from 6pm from the Central Library Courtyard to The Quarry Arts Centre
The Grande Finale of the Festival, children and adults alike can participate in the Lantern Parade showcasing their own lantern creations, from the Library Courtyard to the Quarry Arts Centre with a spectacular Fire Show.
MWAF Competitions and amazing things to watch out for
‘OUT OF THE SQUARE’ - WINDOW COMPETITION
Businesses from across our community work with a charity to create a fabulous window display in support of the arts festival! The winner will be able to donate $1000 to their partner charity. Supported by Vitalise Whangarei.
DESIGN A SIGN
Artists in our community are being called upon to design a sign for the festival and display it in a great place!
The winning artist wins $400. Runner up wins $100
‘WINDOWS TO OUR WORLD’ PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION AND EXHIBITION
20 Entries from each category will be chosen to be mounted and exhibition at the Whangarei Central Library from the 17 July to 1st August.
The winner of each category: Northland, International, Youth, and will win $400, the runner up $100
The winner of the category: Professional will win a $400 gift voucher form Calders Design and Print and the runner up $100
Winning photographs will be a part of the MWAF 2011 Northland calendar!
In partnership with Whangarei Libraries, Friends of the Library and Calders Design & Print.
LANTERN COMPETITION
This is your chance to brighten up a chilly winter night with community and light! Create a Lantern, either at home, in a group, at school or during the 2010 MWAF, and enter your lantern into this competition and carry it on the Lantern Parade. Great prizes to be won!
GRAFFITI ART COMPETITION
Graffiti Artists from across Northland are being invited to take part in this event! Entries will be exhibited at the Old Library from the 26th July until the 1st August. The winning artist will win a $400 Inferno gift voucher! In partnership with Inferno and the Old Library
POETRY CONTESTS
New Hat Poets (unpublished) and Old Hat Poets (published). Cash prizes for winning entries! In partnership with the Whangarei Writers’ Workshop and the New Zealand Society of Authors Northland.
24 HOUR DRAMA COMPETITION AND SHOW
5 in a team. 5 minutes on stage. $500 prize. Starting Fri 30 Jul 5:30pm and finishing with a Show in Capitaine Bougainville Theatre Sat 31 Jul from 7pm. Tickets $5 at the door. In partnership with Northland Youth Theatre.
WINNERS of all the competitions will be announced at the Grande Finale
from 7pm at The Quarry Arts Centre on Sunday the 1st August.
