Poetry in Rotorua

[Poetry] is the lava of the imagination whose eruption prevents an earthquake. So wrote Lord Byron (1788-1824). Fortunately for Rotorua we have some fine and aspiring poets living among us, often in disguised as labourers, office workers, teachers, scientists and so on.

It’s National Poetry Day on July 30 and here in Rotorua we are taking a running start beginning on Thursday July 29 at the Night Market with readings from local and guest poets.

Coordinated by poet and playright Brian Potiki and community artist Jill Walker with support from the Mad Poets and Rotorua District Council, poetry will be read aloud and distributed freely at the Night Market and on Friday the 30th in the City Focus and supporting cafe?.

At the Rotorua District Library Store Cafe? on Friday evening there will be readings from Mr. Potiki and the Mad Poets.

There’s no money in poetry, but there’s no poetry in money, either said Robert Ranke Graves (1895-1985). All of the aforementioned events are free and you are invited to come along and join in!
