Celebrate Maori New Year at Te Papa with an 18 day Matariki Festival programme.

A full Matariki events programme will be available, soon.

Whakanuia te Tau Hou Maori ki te Taiopenga o Matariki kei Te Papa. Tekau ma waru ra te roa o tenei hotaka nui whakaharahara! Akuni, ka whakairi ake te hotaka!

‘Waka – the journeying and coming together of people’

This is our theme for this year. For thousands of years, guided by the stars, waka (canoe) transported people all over the Pacific Ocean and New Zealand. Come to Te Papa and let us take you on a journey of discovery.

About Matariki

In early June, the star cluster Matariki (the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters) will reappear in our dawn skies, being visible for 11 months.
