The School for Scandal

School for Scandal was a hit when it was first performed in 1777 and has been a hit ever since, no doubt due to the marvelously over-the-top characters, whose names are in fact an indication of their natures.

In the first act we meet Lady Sneerwell, who of course sneers well. Her life having been blighted by scandal when she was young, she’s determined to blight as many other lives as she can, aided by Snake, a slippery sort of fellow, always willing to sell his services to the highest bidder.
Then there’s Backbite and Crabtree, a foppish pair of hanky waving, snuff-taking dandies, always quick to tear a reputation to shreds and Mrs.Candour to whom gossip is an art form cleverly disguised as artless prattle.

Into this ‘school’ steps Lady Teazle, a simple country girl newly married to Sir Peter, a wealthy man much older than herself. She is eager to embrace all that is fashionable [including having an affair] and to spend a great deal of money, while he, besotted and bewildered is driven mad by her frivolous behaviour. Too naïve to understand the dangers of the company she is keeping Lady Teazle is about to make them both fair game for the tattle-mongers.
