'The Bold and the Beautiful' Matariki Exhibition

"The Bold and the Beautiful"  A Group exhibition with Te Rangitu Netana, George Netana, Alicia Courtney, Aroha Anderson, Chrissy Anderson, TeHemoata Henare, Lorraine King.

Kete Wharairo, Traditional Korowai, Ta Moko, Contemporary Photography, Art and Jewellery.

During the course of the exhibition Te Rangitu Netana will be available to do Ta Moko (bookings essential) and there will be weaving demonstrations by Te Hemoata Henare and the Northtec raranga students.

Maori New Year is upon us and treasures abound.

Traditionally this time of the year is the time of harvest, of consolidation, of sharing and of whanau and in the Matariki exhibition at Tuatara Gallery this year, these ideas are transformed into an abundant and rich collection of artworks that are a feast for the eyes.

Laid out haphazardly and fully like the bounty inside a Pataka or traditional storehouse, this exhibition is the work of seven northland stars who each work in different media.

Contemporary artist and jewellery maker Alicia Courtney, often represented by dealer gallery FHE in Auckland, plays with feather stars in both the macro and micro sense as well as collaborating with Lorraine King with their tiki jewellery slash artworks.

Rarely seen neinei is the main fibre in a cloak given a contemporary edge with gold leaf highlights by Te Hemoata Henare and kete whakaiiro are taken to its highest level of intricacy in Aroha Anderson's' four two-tone treasures.

The work of celebrated Ta Moko artist Te Rangitu Netana is strikingly captured in the black and white photos of his partner Georgina and those wanting their own story depicted in ink are invited to book in with Te Rangitu at Tuatara for the 1st week of July. TeHemoata and her Northtec weaving students will be also weaving in the gallery during the course of the exhibition.
