Designing Auckland: A Mayoral Conversation

A Mayoral Conversation with... A series of conversations related to urban design, brought to you by the Urban Design Group at Auckland City Council.

The purpose of this series is to promote a wider understanding of urban design issues facing the city and aims to establish Auckland as a world-class, design-led city that is attractive and sustainable in form and function.

A Mayoral Conversation with Larry Beasley

Civic Passion: the key equity in the economy of future cities

Larry Beasley will make the case that building through deliberate design, the city to which people can become truly attached at a visceral level, is the key to future economic success.

He will state the case for a renewal of civic passion, by consumers and voters, based upon quality liveability, as an essential step in redirecting money and power away from the unsustainable patterns of the suburbs toward urban forms that can be compatible with the natural environment. People are more footloose than ever before in human history.

He will argue that because of their commitment to a place and a way of life, people bring their energy, their creativity and their wealth to cities they prefer, and with them comes economic vitality and opportunity. He presents a provocative formula: urban design = economic development = sustainability.

Larry Beasley is the retied Director of Planning for the City of Vancouver. He is now the “Distinguished Practice Professor of Planning” at the University of British Columbia and the founding principal of Beasley and Associates, an international planning consultancy.

Larry Beasley comes to Auckland in partnership with NZ Planning Institute who are running a 2 day Masterclass Workshop on “Implementation strategies to achieve sustainable and liveable development in NZ’s large and small communities”. For more information visit nzplanning.co.nz
