Balance - a design symposium
Balance - a design symposium
Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 May 2010
Hawke's Bay Museum and Art Gallery, Napier
Hot on the heels of HBMAG's highly successful Volume symposium, Balance is a not to be missed design event. In May 2010 some of the brightest names in Australasian design will come together to talk about their work, in an event expected to attract designers, object makers, students and arts professionals from around New Zealand.
Balance will reveal the ideas and strategies that have shaped the careers of leading Australian and New Zealand designers. Multi-disciplinary in approach, Balance will explore the different connections between design, craft and production. The weekend will provide an excellent opportunity for designers and makers to think about what it takes to create and maintain a successful and innovative practice.
Speaking in New Zealand for the first time Robert Foster of Australian design company F!NK & Co will be a highlight of the weekend. Foster is one of Australia's leading metalsmiths, and in 1993 established his innovative design practice F!NK & Co. Foster will be joined by Gretel Harrison of F!NK & Co who will speak about the marketing and business model for the company.
Other presentations draw on designers and commentators from a wide range of disciplines and experiences. These include Candywhistle, Chris Jackson, David Trubridge, Douglas Lloyd Jenkins Genevieve Packer, Katy Wallace and Lucy Hammonds.
Balance will also give symposium delegates a chance to flex their design muscles by taking part in the F.L. Bone Balance Design Challenge - an event in which teams will compete for cash and other great prizes. Winning teams will be rewarded for their energy, innovation and quick - thinking.
Balance provides a unique opportunity for professional and aspiring designers and object makers to come together for what promises to be a highly entertaining and stimulating weekend at Hawke's Bay Museum and Art Gallery, Napier.
