Li Edelkoort

Li Edelkoort is a trend forecaster, curator, publisher and educator who constantly lives in the future. Born in Holland in 1950, she studied fashion and design at the School of Fine Arts in Arnhem, and upon graduation became a forecaster at the leading Dutch department store, the Bijenkorf. There she discovered her talent for sensing upcoming trends. This unique ability to predict what consumers would want to buy several seasons ahead of time brought her to Paris in 1975, working full time as an independent trend consultant.

Li's work has pioneered trend forecasting as a profession; from innovative installations for the Première Vision textile fair to long-ranging lifestyle analysis for the world’s leading brands. Since 1992, Edelkoort’s magazines (View on Colour, InView and Bloom) have redefined the publishing medium and produced images that have become ideograms of our time. More recently, her work has evolved into the realms of education at the Design Academy Eindhoven where she was Chairwoman from 1999 to 2008, humanitarianism within the Heartwear foundation she co-founded in 1993, and curatorial work as she delves into the art and design domain, illuminating museums and exhibits around the world.

Li provides trend analysis and consulting services to major international companies in a wide range of sectors, from cosmetics to cars, telephones to public transportation, from food and flowers to bricks and finance. Studying the links between art, fashion, design and consumer culture, Li analyses and advances the concepts, colors and materials which will be important two or more years hence, because, "there is no creation without advance knowledge, and without design, a product cannot exist."

Li has received continual recognition for her work in providing inspirational stimulus and fostering creative talent. In 2003, TIME Magazine named her as one of the world’s 25 Most Influential People in Fashion, while in 2004 she was named one of the 30 Most Influential People in Design by Icon magazine. In 2007 Li founded the Designhuis in Eindhoven, a cultural institute where she exhibits innovative design. In 2008, the French Ministry of Culture honoured her as a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres and the Dutch Royal Family named her a Knight in the Order of Oranje Nassau. 2009 saw the launch of Archeology of the Future, a retrospective at Paris' Institut Néerlandais highlighting Edelkoort’s forecasting as a landmark medium of social commentary over the last twenty years. This year Li has been asked by Issey Miyake to curate Post-Fossil, a contemporary design exhibit for his 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT museum in Tokyo.
