K' Road Artwork/Seat Opening

Peter Lange with a Preview of his New Creation

The official opening of Chaise Lange, K' Road's first public artwork since 1968, will take place at 7.30pm on Friday 28 May 2010 at 461 K' Road.  Western Bays Community Board Chairman Bruce Kilmister will be officiating at the unveiling of the artwork, a ceramic, wood and rolled steel seat, while drag queens from adjacent Caluzzi Bar and Cabaret will be christening it with their unique form of cabaret performance.

The opening is a public event which will be followed by supper, tea and coffee and a cash bar at nearby Merge Cafe at 453 K' Road.

The seat-come-artwork was designed by renowned potter Peter Lange and contains 1200 hand-made tiles reinforced with rolled steel.  The flax-like effect captured in the green and cream tiles projects an impression of a woven mat, while the undulating foundation of rolled steel gives the sense of a ribbon unfurling.  The work was commissioned by the K' Road Business Association who also funded it along with  Western Bays Community Board, Auckland City Council, Uptown Arts Trust and Calzzi Bar and Cabaret.  The seat is to be gifted to the city by the association following its inauguration.
