Planning the waterfront

Level 2
Auckland’s urban waterfront, which frames the CBD, is under great pressure for change. Major urban renewal and urban intensification projects have taken place, and are proposed, in the waterfront region. However, the redevelopment plans and designs that have been implemented have inadequately protected historical landscapes and public amenities. Based on a morphological analysis of Auckland’s waterfront region in the urban context, Planning students have explored new urban design guidelines and conceptual design proposals for the future change to this important urban region. Auckland is striving to promote itself as a regional and international centre of culture, arts, business and tourism. The students’ design concepts and proposals for waterfront regeneration will be a special contribution to the development of Auckland’s planning and design strategy

In Production

Level 3
In Production assembles a huge variety of concepts and projects developed in the professional programmes in Architecture by the next generation of architects. With over 500 students enrolled in the BAS and MArch(Prof), the School is a vibrant factory of ideas. Many of our projects were developed with external partners: for example, the design of a new campus building for the Confucius Institute and the Skyrise City installations for Architecture Week Auckland. Throughout the year student designs and concepts were presented in a number of exhibitions and large scale events, contributing to the development and discussion of architecture in the professional and public realm.

Transforming Auckland: The Urban Design Studio   Level 3
The Master of Urban Design offers research and practice-led postgraduate study that builds knowledge about the complexities of urban environments and professional skills in urban place and space design for graduates from architecture, landscape architecture and planning. Studio 1 challenged students to consider development opportunities along the Western Rail Corridor and prepare proposals for intensive development at Avondale, Henderson and Swanson. Studio 2 focused on the establishment of a master plan for the Wynyard Quarter to accommodate new retail, commercial and residential activity in a lively new waterfront development for Auckland that includes detailed studies of proposed new urban spaces.
