Parnell puts a new twist on a Christmas classic
Wreaths made from ceramics, paper, textile, print, wood, bronze and fibre optic cable will put a whole new twist on a Christmas classic in Parnell this year.
...Instead of traditional Christmas decorations, Parnell Inc., Parnell’s business association, asked 20 artists to take a very different look at the wreath. The resulting artworks will be on display in stores and galleries along Parnell Road from St Stephens Avenue to Akaroa Street from November 19 to December 19.
The 20 works that form the Good Wreath! exhibition include emerging artists and recent Art School graduates, along with established artists including Jim Wheeler (represented by ARTIS Gallery) and David Trubridge (represented by essenze).
“In the past we’ve decked the halls traditionally, but this year we’ve taken a fresh approach and asked artists to reinterpret the wreath to showcase Parnell’s reputation as the Creative Quarter,” says Debbie Harkness, manager of Parnell Inc..
“The artists’ brief was to create beautiful works that could be hung throughout the year, and they have exceeded that brief with reinterpretations we know will delight Aucklanders.”
In the spirit of Christmas, most works in the exhibition will be for sale by TradeMe auction during this period, with twenty percent of proceeds to be donated to the New Zealand Gynaecological Cancer Foundation.
Shoppers and visitors are invited to pick up a Good Wreath! guide from any participating store, and then stroll along Parnell Road to explore the various artistic wonders on display. Information on each artwork is displayed in store, with more detail and links to each work’s TradeMe auction page at www.parnell.net.nz.
Parnell Inc. is very pleased to partner with the New Zealand Gynaecological Cancer Foundation in the Good Wreath! exhibition. Buyers of the artworks will be supporting the Foundation which works to educate women about the early warning signs of gynaecological cancers.
“As a Foundation that has its base in Parnell, we are delighted to be involved in local events such as Good Wreath! and grateful for the support of the community in achieving our goal of educating NZ women about gynaecological cancers,” says Sarah Hutchings, General Manager, NZGCF.
