Opera Scenes 2010
New Zealand School of Music presents
Opera Scenes 2010
Passionate choices – love and duty
From Purcell to Britten via Mozart and Richard Strauss… with a dash of Offenbach
Following on from the sell out success of last year’s ‘Semele’, NZSM presents an evening of staged opera scenes featuring many of the same talented students. The programme will include excerpts from ‘Dido & Aeneas’, ‘Così fan tutte,’ Britten’s ‘The Turn of the Screw’, Offenbach’s ‘La Vie Parisienne’ and features the final trio and duet from Strauss’s ‘Der Rosenkavalier’.
This ravishing ‘presentation of the rose’ scene from ‘Der Rosenkavalier’ will be sung by Alliance Francaise French Song Competition winners Bryony Williams and Bianca Andrew, and winner of NZSM’s Kapiti Chorale Award for study excellence, Imogen Thirlwall.
All the graduating BMus Classical Voice students will take part in this special opera event, which is the end of year performance for the Vocal Ensemble and Stagecraft course. Musical preparation will be lead by Bruce Greenfield and Mark Dorrell, who will both accompany the scenes on the night. Staging will be by stagecraft and acting tutor Rachel Lenart, a promising young director whose reviews highlight her inventive and astute direction, intelligence and ‘insightful humour’ and who has already accrued a number of Chapman Tripp theatre award nominations including ‘Most Promising New Director’ in 2007.
Please join us for an evening of engaging Opera Scenes performed by these talented young NZSM singers.

- New Zealand School of Music
The New Zealand School of Music, launched in 2006, offers an outstanding range of possibilities for the study of music – for students just beginning their exploration of music as a field of study, for students at various levels of advanced study, and for professionals who are seeking opportunities to strengthen and expand their qualifications. NZSM represents the best of both worlds, supporting long traditions of musical expression in classical, jazz and music studies as well as possibilities for new avenues of enquiry in composition, sonic arts and music therapy.
NZSM is a joint enterprise of Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington combined their prestigious Conservatorium of Music and School of Music into a single new school, bringing together more than 60 years’ experience in the fields of performance, composition, historical research and ethnomusicology.
In addition, the New Zealand School of Music’s ongoing connections with these two distinguished universities offer students opportunities for study unique in New Zealand. Our principal campuses are situated in the heart of Wellington, allowing students to participate in the vibrant life of the cultural capital of New Zealand. Students who prefer to live in Auckland have the opportunity to study jazz at our Albany campus; for students who are interested in more flexible options, we offer a range of papers extramurally.
Our distinguished staff are professionally active both in New Zealand and internationally, providing students with the opportunity for training to an international standard of excellence.
