Mark Graver- World Print Award winner at Wharepuke
The prints in the Harbin Series, made using acrylic resist etching on aluminium plates, were inspired by a trip to Harbin, China and by Chinese calligraphy.
The prints are not directly related to specific Chinese characters but are intended to imply the suggestion of calligraphic writing. The 26 prints reference the 26 letters of the English alphabet so could, perhaps, be read as a code or cipher though my intention was more to convey the essence of the written.
Numbers I, II and III in the series were recently awarded First Prize at the prestigious 2010 Lessedra World Art Print Competition in Sofia, Bulgaria and some of the prints from the series have been exhibited in the USA (at 3 shows), the UK, Canada and Italy.
