Zimbe! African Folk with a Jazz Twist

Zimbe! African Folk with a Jazz Twist.

On 4 September 2010, at 7:30 pm, the City of Dunedin Choir, conductor David Burchell, presents a concert which will include "Zimbe!" by Alexander L'Estrange, and the Negro Spirituals from Tippet's oratorio "A Child of Our Time".

A 40-minute cantata for SATB chorus, unison children's choir and jazz quintet, “Zimbe!” is a vibrant sequence of twelve African and gospel songs charting a day in the life of an African village: children's playground songs, a lullaby, a rousing drinking song, and music used on religious occasions. L'Estrange infuses his unique arrangements with references to jazz, classical and 'world' music.

The City of Dunedin Choir is joined for this performance by St Paul's Cathedral Choristers and Southern Children's Choir.

    City of Dunedin Choir

As Dunedin's leading exponent of large-scale choral works, the City of Dunedin Choir strives for the highest standards in performing the classics of the repertoire, such as Bach's St Matthew Passion and St John Passion, The Messiah (which it has performed about 120 times!), the Verdi Requiem and the Brahms Requiem.

The Choir provides a forum for young, aspiring soloists and welcomes opportunities to perform with other choirs, such as the Invercargill A Capella Singers and the Auckland Choral Society.
