'A Far Cry, Children in Emergencies' UNICEF photos
UNICEF photo exhibition now in Wellington.
‘A Far Cry, Children in Emergencies’, a UNICEF photo exhibition, is now open at Wellington Central Library. The exhibition runs until the 20th of September and is free to the public.
The exhibition displays UNICEF photographs, illustrating the impact of emergencies on children in the developing world. Each year, UNICEF responds to more than 200 emergencies around the world, where children all too often experience the worst consequences of these man-made and natural disasters.
Many of the photos at the exhibition have a profound story behind them including the exhibition’s signature photo, where three girls are leaving the Abu Shouk camp for displaced people near El Fasher city, in North Darfur, to gather firewood. The journey is a seven hour trek, which may seem grueling for young people; however girls as young as eight have been attacked, raped or killed walking this route. Two million people were displaced when they fled terror attacks during the civil conflict, which began in 2003. (Photographer Ron Haviv)
