Writing Romantic Comedy: Wrestling with Genre

When writers take on genre their story must evolve within the constraints of convention.  But all successful films have voice and originality.  How do writers follow the formula without it feeling formulaic?

Writers Roseanne Liang and Angeline Loo, who co-wrote My Wedding and Other Secrets, and writer Nick Ward (Second Hand Wedding, Love Birds, Stickmen), have shown that voice can transcend the restraints of genre with their romantic comedy successes at the box office.  Fittingly, Nick Ward’s latest project is a play, Mike and Virginia, which is a romantic comedy about romantic comedy.

They talk with writer/producer Shuchi Kothari (Firaaq, Apron Strings) about how they grapple with the conventions of romantic comedy to bring their stories to life.
