JUDY MILLAR - Into the belly of the whale

Judy Millar. The Battle, 2011, 705 x 1000mm

Bartley + Company Art invites you to the opening preview of Judy Millar's solo exhibition Into the belly of the Whale.

Wednesday 27 April, 5.30 - 7.30pm.

Exhibition runs from 27 April - 21 May.

We look forward to seeing you in the gallery soon.

We are very pleased to present Judy Millar’s first solo commercial exhibition in Wellington for several years. Into the Belly of the Whale gives local audiences the first opportunity to see her work since New Zealand’s 2009 Venice Biennale exhibition, featuring Millar and Frances Upritchard, was shown at Te Papa in late 2009.

Into the belly of the whale, which predominantly comprises works on paper, can be seen as Millar’s tribute to writer Herman Melville. While painting this exhibition, Millar was reading Heman Melville’s great American novel Moby Dick. As Melville immerses readers in the world of whaling and the sea, so too Millar’s richly layered gestural paintings immerse viewers in painting’s possibilities.

Judy Millar is one of New Zealand’s most highly regarded and internationally successful artists. Having represented New Zealand at the 2009 Venice Biennale, the global art world’s most prestigious event, she has established a solid reputation in Europe and has been invited to participate in the exhibition Personal Structures, a 2011 Venice Biennale collateral event [http://www.venice-exhibitions.org/] This exhibition has an impressive line up of artists and positions Millar amongst the world’s best artists. She will be continuing her exploration of painting’s relationship to architectural space and is producing a huge 3-dimensional painting for the exhibition in the Palazzo Bembo on the Grand Canal, which opens in early June.
