The Glittering East: Orientalists and Orientalism

Linda Pei-Lin Yang, BA/BFA, BA (Hons), MA

This course will provide an introduction and insight into the seductive work of the Orientalism. From Morocco to Egypt, French and British artists sought to capture an exotic 'otherness' that often spoke more about the painter than the painted. You will critically explore the work of masters such as Gerome, Ingres and Delacroix, whose work was pivotal in constructing a pleasantly mysterious East for their Salon audiences. As Orientalism is situated at the crossroads between 'East' and 'West', the dynamics between different cultures, ethnicities and genders will be central to this course.
