WHY DON'T WE? - VOICES FROM THE POETIC UNDERGROUND

We kill, hate, love, love drugs, hate drugs, fail, flounder and blindly follow. In this world of so many answers, there is one burning question: "Why do we...?" Closely followed by the even more urgent: "Why don't we...?"

At Auckland Fringe 2011, Auckland performance poets present Why Don't We...? a show with a difference which takes on the Big Question. Why Don't We...? is Def-Jam-inspired performance poetry from a company unique in this country. Why Don't We...? gives voice to the frustrations and concerns of the younger generation, and interprets them with live music, visuals and theatre.

Prepare to be engaged with the social, political and personal commentary and content of this multi-media spectacle of poetic theatrical performance. And prepare to engage literally, in an inter-active show.

The Literatti are seasoned performers with five years of poetic innovation alongside some strong new voices. Under the creative direction of poet-performer Christian Jensen and supported by spoken word producers Printable Reality, the collective of poets brings their own voices and writing to a cast of characters written into the dramatic story, Why Don't We...?

Each character feels a strong need to escape the control of society into the "garden" where like-minds can and sometimes do meet. Into this garden of promise, we follow the characters on their journey towards unity, a sense of belonging and some creative solutions.

Their discovery - the Big Questions are just stepping stones, points along the road. What and how we are asking matters in the moment, but that's all relative to an even bigger, unfolding picture.

Auckland based performance poetry troupe The Literatti have been presenting their genre defying fusion of spoken word, music, performance, visual art and elements of theatre since 2006. Formed in late 2005 after founder Shane Hollands was inspired by the Def Jam Poets, the group has evolved a collaborative approach, combining multiple voices in an almost symphonic display of contemporary word play and working with numerous other performers, musicians, visual artists and the odd animator or two. Their aim is always to personify poetry, transforming each poem into something that lives, breathes, sounds and behaves. The group then set it to musical soundscapes that range from rock and electronica through to jazz, blues and reggae. Poetry as never seen before!
