In the Workshops at Survive & Thrive this year, we continue the tradition of practical hands-on workshops. Again, there's plenty to choose from.

  • The dynamic duo - Being a creative & an entrepreneur | Justin Lewis

Are you a creative entrepreneur? What approaches & practices could add to what you already do so that you can grow more opportunities, markets and supporters for what you do?

This session focuses on entrepreneurial behaviours and approaches that you can adopt and incorporate in your creative practice right now.

Justin is a founding partner of Indian Ink and collaborated with Jacob Rajan to create the company’s works: Krishnan's Dairy, The Candlestickmaker, The Pickle King, The Dentist's Chair and Guru of Chai. Indian Ink's productions have won numerous awards including two Edinburgh Fringe First Awards and three Production of the Year Awards in New Zealand. Justin has produced numerous national and international tours. He is Deputy Chair of Q Theatre and has been heavily involved in its development from the beginning. In 2008 he received a Kaupapa Oranga Award for his services to theatre.

  • Success dynamics - a matter of the heart | Richard Howard

Are you going forwards or backwards? What do you mean that you're successful or want to be successful or even that you're not successful - yet? What does success look like for you?

This session explores how to build, monitor and manage success. You'll learn about some new ways of evaluating your work performance, your busyness levels and how your daily and weekly outputs contribute to your success or not.

Richard has a multi-faceted career in the creative sector including drama and musical theatre performance, arts management, events and promotions management, creative sector infrastructure development and the design and delivery of professional development opportunities for creative entrepreneurs. He has been part of projects such as The Big Idea website, the New Space Programme, ART Venture, ART Generator network, Survive & Thrive, Kingsland Central Studios and the Arts Cooperative Resource exchange.

  • Creating sales | Mark Olsen

Does your inner sales person need unleashing?

This session will encourage you to explore your sensitivities, attitudes and aspirations around the ‘art of selling' and the culture of prosperity. It will also look at how to engage in selling without compromising your creative principles.

A visual artist, Mark has achieved a lot in the past eight years. He has had 11 solo exhibitions, been a finalist st in the NZ Portrait Awards three times, won the Telecom Regional Art Awards and had his artwork featured on the cover of nearly 1million Auckland phone books as well as being named as the sixth most exciting business within the arts and culture sector by NBR.

Which is not bad for someone who first picked up a paint brush 12 years ago.

  • Finding the fans  | Vicki Allpress-Hill

How do you generate a lot more interest in you and your work and then keep people coming back for more?

Ongoing support from other people, organisations and agencies is vital to your success. This session explores old and new ideas for finding and keeping audiences, customers & clients.

Vicki Allpress Hill has spent nearly two decades bringing audiences to the arts. Since 2000, she has had a particular interest and involvement in e-marketing in the arts and is a regular international speaker, writer and consultant on the subject of using online channels effectively to attract and retain arts patrons.

This session will explore some ways that you can create value for your customers, your investors, and the environment through being creative, resilient, sustainable and future focused.

Rebecca Mills is a leading sustainability strategist. As founder and principal consultant of Ministry of Green Rebecca combines scientific inputs with creative problem solving to craft sustainable futures- finding new opportunities for government and business. Trained in both science and design Rebecca has developed innovate strategies for internationally leading and high profile projects both in New Zealand and Europe.

  • Getting a grip - on the too hard, too dull, too time-consuming | Lorraine Blackley

How do you get the things done that you don't want to do? How do you focus on new ways of addressing old issues and problems?

This interactive session looks at vision, sabotage, complexity, passion, drive, balance and getting a grip. From Lorraine’s experience, working with the seemingly unfathomable psychology behind a creative’s approach to business development she discusses some pertinent points for navigating the obstacles, achieving success and maintaining one’s creative integrity.

Creative and social entrepreneur Lorraine has 20 years experience in designing and facilitating programmes supporting people to step into their full potential. Author of "Creative Process Chart" an illustrated book that you can use in personal and professional settings to stay motivated and on track to manifest whatever it is you want. She is a creative process consultant and transformational coach.

  • Why brand? | Baruch ter Wal

What is a brand? Is your brand working for you to build your cause and reputation?

Branding demands the courage to use your own voice, and the creativity to find something unique to say. This session will be 50% Q&A.

Baruch is Managing Director of Lee Ter Wal Design. He's a business writer, brand strategist, and psychology geek. You can check out his way of thinking at www.ltw.co.nz/btw. Baruch is a Trustee of the Centre for Social Innovation and serves as a creative industries advisor to Auckland City.

  • Getting real about your business | Yvonne McLaren

When did you last check your progress? Knowing where your creative business or creative enterprise sits on the spectrum of growth, stagnation or decline is essential to building a sustainable future.

This session prompts you to ask some important questions of yourself and the way you work. You'll also be introduced to tools to help you assess your current situation and to grow toward your future.

Yvonne has spent ten years building her company Valentine Addis, which helps great New Zealand businesses raise investment from high net worth individuals and seasoned investors. Yvonne is passionate about creativity, innovation and invention.

Yvonne also runs an music artist management company and is a trustee on the Houhanga Rongo Trust which supports people from extremely difficult backgrounds to rebuild their lives.

  • Making the most of social media | Josie Campbell

How can YOU be seen and heard more in all the clamour out there? How can you use social marketing tools to develop stronger relationships with your audience?

This session focuses on the marketing challenge for the creative sector: communicating the compelling value of you (as a creative) and the work that you do.

Josie's career has always been about stakeholder engagement, whether it is working with schools in the charity sector, managing media relationships, or more recently jumping feet first into the world of social media as part of her role as Communications Manager at Performing Arts venues THE EDGE. She uses social media tools as an everyday part of her working life to engage with audiences, build rapport with influencers and generate buzz around events.
