NZSM Friday at 5: Reed All About It

NZSM's Friday at 5 Concert Series

Te Koki, the New Zealand School of Music present the third of our five Friday at 5 concerts for 2011.

This concert celebrates the 'reed' family of instruments from the perspective of both classical and jazz music.

From the jazz 'side of the tracks', a saxophone quintet consisting of Alex Nyman, Colin Hemmingsen, Andre Paris, Hayden Hockley and Mike Isaacs will play a set of three works: 'Are we Keeping You Up Sir?' by Dick Walter, 'Bird' by Harry South and 'Saxology' by Dick Walter. They will be accompanied by a rhythm section of Dan Hayles (piano), Rom Smith (bass) and Shaun Anderson (drums) – all members of the Wellington Jazz Orchestra.

Exploring reed instruments from the classical perspective, clarinetist Nick Walshe will perform two works by NZ Composer (and ex-School of Music lecturer) Ross Harris: 'Klaga' and 'Vaygeshray'. Classical saxophone will feature with 2011 NZSM Concerto competition winner Reuben Chin performing a movement from each of two Sonatas for Alto Saxophone: 'Recitative' from NZ composer John Elmsly's and the 1st Movement of Paul Creston's Sonata. Both works will be accompanied by Emma Sayers (piano).

Completing the programme, the NZSM Clarinet Sextet (Marcus Norman, Nick Walshe, David McGregor, Athene Laws, Hannah Sellars and Patrick Hayes) will perform two works arranged by Marcus Norman: 'Andante' from Mozart's 'Serenade in c minor for Winds', and 'Three Preludes' by Gershwin.

The free one hour concert will start promptly at 5:00pm on Friday 15 July, 2011.

The Friday at 5 series are concerts in which the NZSM comes 'downtown' sharing with Wellington audiences music which reaches out and connects us to our past, future, other cultures and to each other. The concerts all feature the extraordinary talent of NZSM staff, students and friends.

The remaining Friday at 5 concerts in 2011 are on September 9 and October 7.

    New Zealand School of Music

The New Zealand School of Music, launched in 2006, offers an outstanding range of possibilities for the study of music – for students just beginning their exploration of music as a field of study, for students at various levels of advanced study, and for professionals who are seeking opportunities to strengthen and expand their qualifications. NZSM represents the best of both worlds, supporting long traditions of musical expression in classical, jazz and music studies as well as possibilities for new avenues of enquiry in composition, sonic arts and music therapy.

NZSM is a joint enterprise of Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington combined their prestigious Conservatorium of Music and School of Music into a single new school, bringing together more than 60 years’ experience in the fields of performance, composition, historical research and ethnomusicology.

In addition, the New Zealand School of Music’s ongoing connections with these two distinguished universities offer students opportunities for study unique in New Zealand. Our principal campuses are situated in the heart of Wellington, allowing students to participate in the vibrant life of the cultural capital of New Zealand. Students who prefer to live in Auckland have the opportunity to study jazz at our Albany campus; for students who are interested in more flexible options, we offer a range of papers extramurally.

Our distinguished staff are professionally active both in New Zealand and internationally, providing students with the opportunity for training to an international standard of excellence.
