Matariki EXHIBITIONS 2011

Taupo Museum - June 03 to July 12

Nga Hauwahine e Whitu - our seven sisters
&
Nga Mata Kaka - beacons of light

Taupo Museum is setting some new boundaries with two impressive exhibitions.

The exhibitions involve fine art shows from Tuwharetoa artists, specialist artists talks and installations: Nga Hauwahine e Whitu (our seven sisters) and Nga Mata Kaka (beacons of light).

The two shows feature some of the highest achievers in contemporary Maori art.

The first exhibition named Nga Hauwahine e Whitu (our seven sisters) is a group show featuring accomplished and recognised Tuwharetoa Wahine artists.

The artists featured are Roka Ngarimu-Cameron, Te Maari Gardiner, June Grant, Veranoa Hetet, Kataraina Hetet, Paerau Corneal, Edna Pahewa and works from the late Emily Schuster and Dawn Schuster - Smith.

Nga Mata Kaka (beacons of light), the second show is a larger exhibition of contemporary Tuwharetoa art works based on a verse of a poem by writer Rolly Habib.

Habib will also feature in the regular Friends of the Museum lecture series speaking about his works on Tuesday 21st of June, 12 - 1 pm.

“These exhibitions represent an important step forward for the arts in our district” says Museum Researcher Eleazar Bramley, Curator of the shows.

“We’ve been able to produce these exhibitions with the enthusiasm of the artists and the strong support of local Iwi”.  Bramley is also personally presenting two new works in the exhibitions.

The shows are proudly sponsored proudly sponsored by Te Kapa o Te Rangiita ki Oruanui Marae Trustees and Hapu, Punawhakaata ki Oruanui Charitable Trust and the Taupo Museum.
