French Knitting

Anti-consumerist fashion designer Emma Churchill graduated from Massey University, Wellington in 2009 with an honours degree in Fashion Design. 

"I design by allowing the materials to determine the outcome and only consider durability, necessity and function, leaving the aesthetics up to chance. 

"The concept of this exhibition and its contents were influenced by my mum who is an oblivious non-consumer, as well as Nana Churchill who taught me French knitting when I was six; the book Cradle to Cradle by Michael Braungart and William McDonough; Piet Mondrian's ideas behind his painting Pier and Ocean, 1915; and Sandra Backlund's amazing knitted creations. 

"I truly desire a world of people who understand the implications of their unethical producing and over-consuming ways, and as a result make decisions based on quality, necessity and function rather than aesthetics, fashion and want." 
By offering an alternative to the production process and the product itself, Emma aims to influence a shift in the way that we consume.
