Cecilia Novero talk on animals in contemporary art
“Facing Animals in Recent Art: An Addendum to Jenny Gillam’s Dog Frank” – A Talk by Dr. Cecilia Novero
On Saturday November 5 Dr. Cecilia Novero will be giving a talk on the representation of animals in contemporary art.
This event will start at 2pm. Dr. Novero’s talk, “Facing Animals in Recent Art: An Addendum to Jenny Gillam’s Dog Frank,” will provide some examples of how animals have come to be represented in recent international art. A particular focus will be the European avant-garde artist Daniel Spoerri’s use of animals. Dr. Novero will also discuss Frank. Blue Oyster Art Project Space, Jenny Gillam’s current video installation at the Blue Oyster, which features the artist’s dog, Frank.
Dr. Novero is Senior Lecturer in the German Programme at the University of Otago. Her publications include Antidiets of the Avant-Garde: From Futurist Cooking to Eat Art (University of Minnesota Press, 2010). She has also published on Dada, the cultural history of food, Viennese Actionism, artists Daniel Spoerri and Antoni Miralda, travel writing, and German and European film. Her most recent research interest is animals in literature, art and film.
