Su Ballard and Cara-Ann Simpson discussion session
On Saturday the 8th of October at 2pm Melbourne artist Cara-Ann Simpson and Dr. Su Ballard from the Dunedin School of Art will be at the Blue Oyster, talking about electronic and digital art in a trans-Tasman context.
Cara-Ann Simpson is currently exhibiting at the Blue Oyster. Her exhibition “Geo Sound Helmets” is an interactive sound and visual art installation that explores the creation of new technology (open-air active audio signal cancellation) and perceptions of space. This is an ongoing project between Simpson and engineer Eva Cheng. “Geo Sound Helmets” consists of a series of large, painted helmet-like objects with speakers inside. Gallery visitors are invited to put their head inside different “helmets” to hear different three-dimensional soundscapes, including the sounds of Toronto, Istanbul, Melbourne, Singapore and Thalberg in Queensland. The helmets are fully interactive – visitors will be able to control the work with their breath. This exhibition is the global premiere of the Geo Sound Helmets.
Dr. Ballard is a Lecturer in Electronic Arts at the Dunedin School of Art. Her research interests centre around digital aesthetics, experimental sound and video, visual culture, and media ecologies.
Refreshments will be provided, all welcome.
