The woolly walk along

Devonport Wharf

There will be heaps of people in Auckland during September/October this year due to the Rugby World Cup. Many people will visit Devonport. I would like to create an outdoor wool art exhibition for Aucklanders and visitors to enjoy. The plan is to cover as much as possible of the wooden hand rail along the Devonport Wharf in Auckland. So let’s be creative!

Knit or crochet something beautiful. Use any colours and yarns you like. A stripy piece is great but if you would like to be a bit more creative – go for it! Feel free to add further embellishments, just make sure that they are firmly attached to your piece.

There are only three things to be aware of:

1. YOUR PIECE MUST MEASURE 26CM x ANY WIDTH/LENGTH

If you would like to have a “feature area”, these are the measurements to keep in mind:

4cm, back of handrail [not visible]

9cm, top of handrail 4cm, front of handrail [feature area]

9cm, under handrail [not visible]

2. YOU HAVE TO LEAVE SOME ENDS ON YOUR PIECE

Please leave one end at each short side so that I can attach your piece to the one next to it. And leave a long end so I can sew it on to the hand rail.

3. PLEASE SEND ME YOUR PIECE BEFORE THE END OF JULY

The Rugby World Cup starts on 9 September, but I will need time to put all the pieces together. The artwork will be put in place on 10 September.

Feel free to hand in as many pieces as you like – the hand rail is pretty long! If you want to sign your piece of art with a label or tag with your name or web address on it, you’re more than welcome. It might be a good idea to laminate the label, Auckland can be a bit rainy this time of the year.

There will be a TV documentary made about this art project! Exciting!

IF YOU LIVE IN AUCKLAND AND HAVE SOME TIME TO SPARE SATURDAY 10 SEPTEMBER – FEEL FREE TO HELP ME PUT THIS ARTWORK UP. I WILL NEED ALL THE HELP I CAN GET ON THE DAY!
