Going West - A Night with David Eggleton

David Eggleton

A taster event ahead of Going West Books and Writers Weekend, A Night with David Eggleton brings words alive off the page.

Dunedin-based bard David Eggleton began reciting his poetry in the New Zealand rock music scene of the early 1980s. He has toured on the cabaret circuit in Australia, the United States, Europe and Britain, and done gigs with poets Benjamin Zephaniah, John Cooper Clarke and Attila the Stockbroker. He has also over the years released a number of CD recording collaborations with a variety of musicians. These days he performs his poetry in schools, universities, clubs and cafes around New Zealand.

David Eggleton will perform in the Tool Room, the bar below The Hardware Cafe. Now booked by local impresario Annie Franklin, the Tool Room was, for many years, one of those smoke-filled spaces with no windows, that evoked the flavour of the Beat years of the 50s. It now is home to some outstanding music song and verse, and many a drink as well.

Going West Books & Writers Festival

Going West Books & Writers is the annual literary festival that takes place in Waitakere, Auckland City each September.

The festival celebrates its 16th anniversary in 2011. Its original inspiration came from the train journey described by Maurice Gee in his novel "Going West". The festival incorporates a variety of word-based events including: a literary weekend that brings writers and performers from around the country to discuss writing and the world of ideas; a NZ theatre season; a poetry slam; second-hand and rare book market; exhibitions; and events for youth.
