The Economic Development group at Auckland Council works to attract and grow business in Auckland city. The council's economic development strategy aspires for Auckland city to have a more productive and globally connected economy, one that delivers jobs, higher incomes and improved living standards for Aucklanders. Auckland Council is committed to fostering the growth of the city's creative industries through its action plan, Blueprint: Growing Auckland's creative industries. Sponsoring The Big Idea is a key part of the council's actions to enable the creative sector to collaborate and innovate.  The council also sponsors various creative industry organisations, events and projects.

Auckland’s creative industries are growing despite the 2008/2009 recession, according to a new report Auckland’s Creative Industries – The numbers 2009.

City Development chairperson Aaron Bhatnagar says Auckland City Council focused its support on the creative industries as these have produced strong economic growth in terms of revenue, employment, exports, city and national branding, and while attracting and retaining a skilled workforce.

    - Urban design of city environments such as Fort Street and Elliot street redevelopments
    - City planning and management of projects like Aotea Quarter development
    - Provision of world class library resources
    - Support of industry associations and business events such as The Big Idea, ART Survive and Thrive forums and Film Auckland
    - Delivery of community services to maintain and develop community and recreation facilities and centres
    - Support and delivery of community and major events such as Pasifika Festival, Lantern Festival and Music in Parks
    - Facilitation of film productions in the region
