Project Twin Streams
Project Twin Streams is an award winning West Auckland environmental restoration project which works with communities to restore the streams in their local neighbourhoods.
Since it started in 2003, the project has:
* Cleared streambanks of rubbish and noxious weeds and replanted them with native trees and shrubs
* Purchased and relocated 78 houses located within the flood plain to reduce flooding hazards and become stormwater management reserves
* Created an extensive network of walk/ cycleways to encourage sustainable transport choices, and allow local residents to enjoy and become more connected to their streams
* Partnered with local community organisations to engage residents to take an active part in caring for our streams
* Worked with schools, businesses and many other community groups to ‘adopt’ areas of streambank to restore and maintain
* Used creative engagement as a tool for engaging children and adults to learn about stormwater, and how to look after our waterways
* Won a number of regional, national and international awards.

Currently there are five local catchment areas supported by four community organisations.
Project Twin Streams is also supported by local iwi Te Kawerau a Maki and Ngati Whatua, Auckland Council, Waicare and Manaaki Whenua Landcare.
