Sweet Exhibition needs your help
Volunteers at Howick Historical Village are creating a Victorian Sweet shop as part of a lead up to large Christmas display at the Village. However they have hit a snag –there are not enough glass jars in the museum for them to put the boiled sweets into.
The volunteers are asking for the public to check their cupboards and garages and hunt out any large old glass jars they may have lurking around and donating these to the Village.
Christine Miles says “Ideally the glass jars will be in good condition and really quite large, it would be great if they were Victorian but we would be willing to accept jars which looked the part even if they were a bit modern”.
The sweet shop is part of a large scale revamp for Christmas with the Village creating a colonial Christmas wonderland in the heritage cottages. General Manager Brian Mossman notes “the Village will become Live for the month of December for pre-booked tour groups and will be great opportunity to gather friends, family, colleagues or social clubs to enjoy the seasonal decorations and old fashioned pastimes.”
The Christmas display will be launched at the November 15th Live Day and any jars in good condition can be dropped off to the Howick Historical Village in Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga within the next month. They will not be able to be returned and will be used as hands on props.

Howick Historical VillageHowick Historical Village is an open air museum with 30 heritage buildings furnished with decor and displays highlighting the fencible period of 1840-1880. Costumed villagers are present on Live Days (every third Sunday of the month) and engage in Victorian crafts and pastimes.
Museum staff care for the artefacts which have been donated by the community and range from fabulous Victorian clothing, to military campaign desks with a focus on authentic domestic items. An archive, library and art collection can be researched by appointment. www.fencible.org.nz
