John Lyall | Performance and Floor Talk at Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts
John Lyall | Performance and Floor Talk | Saturday 13th June 2.00pm.
This Saturday Auckland based artist John Lyall will be presenting a performance and floor talk at Te Tuhi.
It is thirty years since Lyall began this painstakingly detailed body of drawings currently included in the exhibition Select > Effect > Export. Lyall constructed ten detailed mazes by hand that numerically reveal the order in which they have been created. He states, 'I was interested in the idea of turning myself into a machine to subvert my every natural instinct in art making. The works are everything I'm not to the nth degree'.
Lyall’s performance will also be one not to miss. First performed in Sarajevo, his politically layered performance attempts to come to terms with a lost technology in the drawings and the time that has passed since they were created.
John Lyall was born in Sydney, Australia. He attended the Sydney College of the Arts between 1980 and 1982 completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a double major in Sculpture with specialist areas in sound and performance. In 1983 he moved to New Zealand and completed his secondary teachers training in Auckland in 1984. Between 1992 and 1993 he completed his Masters in Fine Arts, with First Class Honours in Sculpture from Elam at the University of Auckland. He also received the Fowlds Memorial Prize for pre-eminent Fine Arts Student. He has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions since 1982 both within New Zealand and international. He is represented in private and public collection; including Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington and the Rotorua Museum of Art and History.
Te Tuhi’s putting on a free shuttle van service, transporting inner-city Aucklander’s to and from Te Tuhi for John Lyall’s performance and floor talk. The shuttle meets at 1.30pm outside ARTSPACE at 300 Karangahape Rd and returns after the event.
