Free magazine for indie movie makers
Viewfinder magazine, the publication for people interested in making independent movies and documentaries is to be given away free.
Publisher Steve Hart launched Viewfinder last year as a retail publication that came out every two months. But now it is going monthly and he has adopted a free distribution model. From today, anyone can subscribe to receive the magazine via the www.Viewfinder.co.nz website.
Hart says among the reasons for giving the magazine away as a free PDF and online page-flip publication is that he wants as many people as possible to enjoy Viewfinder and read features written by a team of industry professionals such as sound recordist Ande Schurr, Emmy award-winning lighting/camera operator Gary Foster and media funding expert Mitch Santell.
In addition, each issue of the magazine features in-depth interviews with people working in the industry. Previous issues of the magazine have included interviews with doco and TV series makers Leanne Pooley, Adam Clancey and Polly Green.
Another reason for adopting the digital edition is to increase frequency to a monthly publication and the ability to feature video and audio within the pages of the publication.
“Featuring video within the pages of the PDF is something we are experimenting with,” says Hart. “But we won’t be creating huge PDF files that have videos embedded in them – instead the video will be streamed from our server to keep the PDF size as small as possible.”
Hart launched the magazine because he couldn’t find a New Zealand publication that featured ‘how to do it’ articles for independent movie makers.
With the growing number of people now able to record video using phones and DSLR cameras, and with high definition cameras getting smaller and cheaper all the time, this magazine helps readers shoot and edit like the professionals.
